1964年，与四位兄弟杰基、蒂托、杰梅因及马龙一同组建了杰克逊五人组，初次登上职业音乐舞台；1971年，发行了个人首支单曲《Got to be there》，标志其开始单飞；1982年，所发行的专辑《颤栗》是其音乐生涯最畅销的专辑；1983年5月16日，在录制的节目中首次表演他招牌的月球漫步；1984年1月27日，拍摄广告中发生事故导致头皮二级烧伤，为掩盖疤痕进行治疗；1988年，杰克逊出版了他唯一的一本个人传记《月球漫步》；2009年6月25日，正为复出演唱会《就是这样》做准备的杰克逊因急性丙泊酚和苯二氮䓬类药物中毒导致心脏骤停，并因抢救无效与世长辞。

2010年，被授予格莱美终生成就奖。
