Mary Marg Helgenberger 1958年11月16日出生于弗里蒙特内布拉斯加，父亲是Hugh Helgenberger，母亲是Kay Helgenberger。Marg与她的姐妹Ann、兄弟Curt成长于Platte河的North Bend地区^[1]。

她进入了Kearney州学院，并且去了西北部Evanston，IL学院主修演讲和戏剧。 她因为在大学的戏剧作品A Streetcar Named Desire中扮演中角色Blanche Dubois而被发现。

在1981年的夏天，Marg因为扮演了NU校园作品Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew中的Kate一角，而被Ryan's Hope的星探发现。星探为Marg提供了一个在Ryan's Hope中已有的角色，但是Marg想先完成大学的学业。因此，她承诺一定会再来找Marg。就是这样，Marg得到了她的第一个专业的角色，Siobhan Ryan。

1984年，Marg遇到了RH中的客串演员Alan Rosenberg。她觉得Alan是个英俊的家伙，到1986年，他们开始约会。1989年，两人完婚。婚后他们有了个儿子Hughie，他是以Marg的父亲Hugh Helgenberger命名的。

1990年，她因为在一部高质量的剧集《中国海滩》China Beach中参演，而获得了Emmy奖最佳女配角。并且分别在1991和1992年因为China Beach而被提名。她也因在CSI中扮演女主角Catherine Willows而在2000获得Emmy奖最佳女主角的提名。

2012年1月，Marg在好莱坞星光大道留下了属于自己的一颗星，在此之后，她宣布退出出演了长达近12年CSI拉斯维加斯篇。

2013年9月，确认将在CBS新剧中《超脑特工》担任主演。此剧将于2014年2月24日（周一）晚十点播出。

2019年5月17日，参演的电影《一条狗的旅程》在北美上映。^[2]
