歌曲的曲调取样自 The Clash歌曲《Straight To Hell》，而歌曲副歌部分的歌词则来自Wreckx-N-Effect的《Rump Shaker》。对于《Straight To Hell》的取样，歌曲的制作人之一迪普洛解释道，在创作时他曾将原曲的开头部分循环，并对产生效果感到满意，于是便决定在此基础上进行创作。

《Paper Planes》是一首简单但却有着丰富声音层次的歌曲，其敏感的歌词将枪声和收银机声这两种不协调的声音进行了巧妙的处理。从内容上看，歌曲讽刺了美国的资本主义制度和美国反移民的呼声，是首隐晦的、节奏轻快的说唱乐。

歌曲的音乐录影带于2007年12月17日通过 MTV网站先行发布，由伯纳德·古尔利执导拍摄，在美国纽约布鲁克林区的贝德福德-史岱文森完成拍摄。

音乐录影带将纸飞机在纽约城上空盘旋的镜头穿插其中，而M.I.A.则以在箱车内售卖三明治的移民形象出现。在歌曲处于枪击声之时，闪现出街道标志、人群和餐馆标志的镜头。嘻哈组合 Beastie Boys成员Mike D和Adrock以及嘻哈歌手 Rye Rye、Afrikan Boy等人在音乐录影带里出镜。
