内蒙古地质学会地层古生物研究工作委员会的科研人员经过半年多的努力，在锡盟苏尼特左旗发现了晚白垩世早期的美掌二连龙化石。美掌二连龙是距近有八千万年左右的两足行走的杂食性镰刀龙类恐龙。镰刀龙类主要分布于亚洲白垩纪地层。最近发现于内蒙古上白垩统二连组的杨氏内蒙古龙（Neimongosaurus yangi）代表这一类群中较为原始的属种。

重建图依据下列特征将Erliansaurus bellamanus归入镰刀龙超科，肩胛骨干远端狭窄，肱骨近端角状，肱骨有后转子等特征。中国ivpp等在内蒙古自治区二连浩特西南方向二十公里苏尼特左旗发现一新品 种的镰刀龙类，通过研究产自同一地点的镰刀龙类新材料，我们鉴定出一个新种，美掌二连龙(Erliansaurus bellamanusgen. et sp. nov.) 。
