普塞尔

　　十一岁就做乐曲在皇家教堂演出，十四岁担任管理及修理皇家乐器之职，因而得到许多音乐的知识与修养，并为皇家乐队做了多首进行曲也是詹姆士二世御前大键琴师。二十岁继承老师的职务担任西敏寺大教堂管风琴师，同时推出很多作品，对于戏剧和教堂音乐多所贡献。直到1695逝世，享年36岁。死后葬于西敏寺他生前所弹奏的管风琴底下。

　　普塞尔有生之年一直被民众所欣赏与爱戴，可是死后他的名声和音乐每况愈下。英国的爱乐者开始偏好德国人的作品，却忽略了自己的作曲家。十九世纪时，有些普塞尔的作品被印制出版，但多半是经过了修改，他大胆的合声和不同凡响的旋律都被修改过，很多合唱曲甚至被重新配置和声，更糟糕的是有许多被演奏的作品是他最差的创作，于是被误解为一个沉闷无趣的作曲家。

　　1876年普塞尔协会(Purcell Soceity)终于开始有计划的将他的作品以原谱出版。普塞尔全集的最后一部，第32部，在1962年出版，也因此他的 歌曲和室内乐才开始逐渐地在被人演唱、演奏甚至于灌录成唱片。
