　   父亲是马戏团的小丑演员。8岁时全家移居伦敦，先后在英国和法国就读。1907年，她前往纽约，与约翰．德鲁克合演了舞台剧《我的妻子》，并以此蜚声百老汇。1915年，以《佩吉》步入影坛，此后又连续主演了12部无声片。期间与歌舞演员兼舞台监督齐格菲结婚。进入有声片时代，她又相续出演了几十部影片，但多数演一些轻浮浅薄、唠唠叻叻的喜剧人物。1949年，她出版了自传《我鼻子上的羽毛》。

　　原名玛丽．威廉．埃．塞尔伯特．艾普尔顿．伯克，生于华盛顿特区。幼时随家迁往事伦敦，1903年首次在伦敦舞台上演出，不久就以擅演音乐剧成名。1907年父亲死后，她回到美国。由于她长相秀美、性格泼辣、表演极具个性，很快蜚声百老汇，一些名作家如马克．吐温都是她家的座上客。1913年，她结识了歌舞大王齐格飞并应邀主演了齐格飞的一些歌舞剧，后来两人结为夫妇。1915年，托马斯．英斯以三十万美元的代价请她主演影片《佩姬》。此后，她又主演了十几部无声片。1921年，她返回舞台在百老汇演戏，十年后才加到影坛，参加好莱坞有声片的演出。这一时期，她多是扮演一些喜剧性的配角。1936年，米高梅影片公司拍摄影片《歌舞大王齐格飞》时，她担任顾问，而她则由女演员茂娜．洛埃扮演。

　　2、二十世纪三〇年代，三大形式的歌舞片成鼎足之势。它们分别是，派拉蒙的小歌剧传统歌舞剧，雷电华的罗曼蒂克歌舞片以及华纳兄弟的“后台”演出故事歌舞片。似乎，没米高梅什么事。1939年年底，《绿野仙踪》横空出世。谁想，这部成本为277.7万美元的电影，最终在北美拿下了1671万美元的票房佳绩。随后几年，米高梅接连推出制作豪华的工艺彩色歌舞片。逐步，正为了歌舞片的霸者。女主角碧昂帕克更是闪光。
