序言

本书根据《高职高专教育英语课程教学基本要求》,针对高职学生特点编写而成。本书紧紧围绕职业教育特色,以“必需”和“够用”为原则,紧扣大纲要求,选材新颖,能够激发学生的学习兴趣。
本书内容根据交际法教学原则设计,体现了“以学生为主体”的特点,着重培养学生实际英语应用能力。全书共16个单元,每个单元均由LEAD IN,READING,USEFUL WORDS&EXPRESSIONS,LISTENING&SPEAKING,WRITNG,GRAMMAR.和SUPPIEMENTARYREADING组成,目的是对同一个主题通过听说读写不同层面的训练,使学生的英语应用能力得到提高,为以后的专业英语学习打下基础。
本书由浙江国际海运职业技术学院王维平主编并统稿。具体编写分工为:浙江交通职业技术学院吕青编写了第1单元和第2单元;王维平编写第3~16单元;浙江国际海运职业技术学院许穗和金叶编写了全书的听力部分。
本书附赠的光盘中包括书中所有的听力内容,供广大读者进行听力训练时使用。
本书配有《实用英语学习指导与专项练习》(ISBN 978-7-111-31681-7)。
本书在编写过程中得到了国内外教育专家的指点和帮助:英国牛津大学Dr Colin Brock和英国赫尔大学DL Ian Shaw热心协助本书的编写工作;浙江国际海运职业技术学院的全体英语教师为教材的编写提出了许多宝贵的意见和建议,在此表示衷心的感谢。

Let me introduce myself.My name is Valentine.I lived in Rome during thethird century.That was long long ago!At that time,Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius.I didn’t like Emperor Claudius.and 1 wasn’t the only one!A lot of people shared my feelings. Claudius wanted to have a big army.He expected men to volunteer to join.Many men just did not want to fight in WarS.They did not want to leave their wives and families.As you might have guessed,not many men signed up.This made Claudius furious.So what happened?He had a crazy idea.He thought thatif men were not married,they would not mind joining the army.So Claudius de。cided not to allow any more marriages.Young people thought his new law was cruel.I thought it was preposterous!I certainly wasn’t going to support that law!
Did I mention that 1 was a priest?One of my favorite activities was to malty couples.Even after Emperor Claudius passed his law,I kept on performing marriage ceremonies——secretly,of course.It was really quite exciting.Imagine a small candlelit room with only the bride and groom and myself.We would whisper the words of the ceremony.1istening all the while flor the steps of soldiers.
