1969年8月8日,出生于贵州遵义。
1987年9月至1992年7月,在清华大学材料工程系金属材料及热处理专业就读大学本科。
1992年9月至1994年2月,在西南交通大学材料系金属材料专业攻读硕士学位。
1994年3月至1997年12月,在西南交通大学应用力学与工程系固体力学专业攻读博士学位。
1997年12月至2003年7月,担任西南交通大学应用力学与工程系讲师、副教授。
2001年9月至2002年9日,在本名古屋大学微系统工程系进行访问学者合作研究。
2003年7月至2005年7月,担任西南交通大学应用力学与工程系教授、系副主任。
2005年,入选教育部新世纪优秀人才支持计划;同年,入选四川省杰出青年学术带头人培养计划。
2005年7月至2008年6月,担任西南交通大学应用力学与工程系教授、博士生导师、系副主任。
2007年,入选西南交通大学“扬华之星”高层次人才培养计划。
2008年7月至2015年1月,担任西南交通大学力学与工程学院教授、博士生导师、副院长、院长(2010)。
2008年11月至2009年1月,担任澳大利亚Monash大学机械与航空工程系访问教授。
2009年10月至2010年9月,担任德国Bochum鲁尔大学连续统力学研究所“洪堡”高级研究员。
2010年,获得国家杰出青年基金。
2011年11月至2011年11月,担任香港科技大学机械系访问教授(7天)。
2012年3月至2012年9月,担任德国Siegen大学土木系结构力学研究所“洪堡”高级研究员。
2014年12月至2014年12月,担任新加坡南洋理工大学机械与航空系访问教授(7天)。
2015年1月,担任西南交通大学牵引动力国家重点实验室主任、力学与工程学院院长。
2021年12月-西南交通大学党委委员、常委,副校长。[4][3]
2021年12月31日,西南交通大学召开会议,宣布:康国政任中共西南交通大学大学委员、常委,西南交通大学副校长(试用期一年)。[4]
康国政主要研究领域为复杂加载和环境下的材料本构关系及其有限元实现研究;疲劳与断裂;复合材料细观力学研究;工程结构的有限元分析。长期致力于材料循环本构关系与疲劳失效行为以及结构服役安全性分析,揭示了多种材料的循环变形特征和疲劳失效行为,建立了新的材料本构关系和疲劳失效模型。[1][5][6]
截至2016年6月,康国政主持国家自然科学基金等国家级项目8项、省部级基金项目12项;在先进材料的循环本构理论和相关疲劳失效问题研究方面取得了一系列创新性的成果。[1]

康国政认为,他山之石,可以攻玉。多出去走走、看看外国的学术氛围,一定是好的。但能够这样做的前提是在国内有扎实的基础。面对面的交流远比所谓书上、杂志上看的学术成果收获更大。本科学习要培养的应当是学生发现问题、解决问题的能力以及刻苦踏实、积极主动、耐得住寂寞的学术研究素质。这些都是优秀的科研人员必须具备的能力。科研不是游戏,总有艰难困苦;科研不是灌输知识,不积极不主动,只能使科研工作停滞不前。科研与课堂的区别在于科研不知道答案,经验、方法只能依靠实践来锻炼。有自学能力、创新思维和积极主动的同学,后劲足,老师也更加青睐。[1]
力学专业可谓“以不变应万变”,力学是工程科学的基础,力学人可以结合工程实际按照自己的兴趣来选择科学研究的道路,但要对工程问题要有充分的了解。然而,理论基础比较扎实的人结合工程问题进行基础和应用基础研究,跨越的鸿沟很小,反过来就不太容易。[1]康国政
