        约翰·兰迪斯出生于美国芝加哥，曾任特技演员，对讲笑话亦特别擅长。1973年编导处女作《Schlock》，是以大猩猩肆虐南加州为题材的恐怖喜剧。五年后执导《动物屋》，捧红了胖子谐星约翰布鲁奇。其后两人再合作《福禄双霸天》，商业上大获成功。在八十年代拍了一些广受欢迎的喜剧，包括《你整我，我整你》和《来去美国》，恐怖喜剧《美国狼人在伦敦》也影响深远。近年也拍摄了不少电视剧，并且参加一些影片的演出。

美国导演约翰-兰迪斯，18岁便从高中退学，在20世纪福克斯公司的邮件收发室里当上了一名小工，随后开始在一些影片里跑龙套，或是担当特技演员。21岁这年，兰迪斯通过一个偶然的机会，得到了B级恐怖片《次品》的导演机会，岂料这部成本超低的小制作电影，竟然收获了600万美元的票房，从此兰德斯便打算从事导演行当。

        1980年，兰迪斯以无厘头喜剧片《福禄双霸天》威震江湖，这部由约翰·贝鲁什和丹·艾克罗伊德两大谐星主演的电影，成为了美国耍宝贱俗喜剧的范本。在本片票房大获成功之后，兰迪斯又把目光转向了恐怖片领域，《美国狼人在伦敦》和《阴阳魔界》的连轴发力，让兰迪斯成为了80年代初颇受欢迎的商业片导演。《美国狼人在伦敦》在化装水平上达到了继《星球大战》之后的另一种极致，《阴阳魔界》中四段颇有哲理的小故事则展现出了兰迪斯的非凡想象力。紧接着的《神勇三蛟龙》和《皇家密杀令》又让他回到了喜剧电影的创作高峰，史蒂夫-马丁等笑星推向了前台。由于兰迪斯在好莱坞的名气如日中天，1989年，威尼斯国际电影节向他发出邀请，让他第一次担当了评审团成员，所以今年兰迪斯的第二次光临水城。

          有趣的是，整个80年代顺风顺水的兰迪斯，进入90年代后却曾一度变成了烂片魔王，1992年与史泰龙合作的《龙哥你好也》杀入了金酸莓最差导演决赛圈；1995年与艾迪-墨菲合作的《比弗利山警探3》让他再次入围这一奖项；1996年的《笨人一族》第三次为兰迪斯带来难堪。好在那段时间他拍摄的电视剧《发梦》获得了相当不俗的成绩，弥补了他在电影领域的尴尬。1997年，一部《美国狼人在纽约》让兰迪斯恢复了人气，之后又拍出了《福禄双霸天2000》。目前，兰迪斯正在筹拍新片《史诗的篇幅》（EpicProportions）。
