弗兰基是纽约一家廉价小餐馆的女招待。约翰尼是一个因诈骗罪被判了一年半徒刑的中年男子，他刚刚刑满释放，来纽约寻找工作。他被餐馆好心的老板尼克收留了，当了一名快餐厨师。约翰尼对弗兰基产生兴趣，想约她出去走一走。弗兰基拒绝了，但约翰尼又在她的公寓出现，说想陪她去参加晚会。晚会上，约翰尼一直陪着弗兰基，并善意地跟她开玩笑，后来又徒步把她送回了家，他们之间的友谊变成了情欲，结果约翰尼留在她家过了一夜，但当他回到餐馆上班时，弗兰基又开始憎恶约翰尼对她处处献殷勤，对他失去兴趣。他感到心绪不宁。最后，弗兰基向他承认，过去的一个男朋友曾使她受了感情和肉体上的创伤，至今她还没有完全恢复。于是约翰郑重地向弗兰基求婚，他们相互取得了信任和理解。她终于在自己的内心深处和家里为约翰尼找到了一个位置。
