《小五义》为全称《忠烈小五义传》，又称《续忠烈侠义传》。作为侠义小说的代表作之一，它深受民众的喜爱，流传极为广泛。据清代文光楼主人《小五义序》说，《三侠五义》及其续书都是“石玉昆原稿”。石玉昆是清代道光、咸丰年间的说唱艺人。

一般认为，文光楼主人的说法难以成立，不足采信。从作品的具体内容看，《小五义》与《三侠五义》出自不同作者之手，《小五义》说唱的痕迹更为明显，而文字上的粗率也更突出。《小五义》很可能是从说唱本改编过来，成于众人之手，而未经细致的润饰。

《小五义》的中心人物已由《三侠五义》中的包公转为包公门生颜查散，而重要的侠义人物，除了前辈“七侠五义”之外，增加了几个晚辈义士，即钻天鼠卢方之子粉面子都卢珍、彻地鼠韩彰义子霹雳鬼韩天锦、穿山鼠徐庆之子山西雁徐良、锦毛鼠白玉堂之侄玉面专诸白芸苼，这四个小义士加上《三侠五义》中原有的人物小义士艾虎，便是“小五义”。

《小五义》并不是紧接着《三侠五义》的结尾续写的，它实际上是从《三侠五义》一百回后开始写起，部分内容与前书重出。小说以襄阳王赵珏图谋叛乱为线索，历叙颜查散奉旨巡按襄阳，大印被盗；白玉堂坠铜网而死；众侠义云集襄阳，蒋平找回大印；智化用计，里应外合，收降襄阳王党羽钟雄；破铜网时，颜查散被沈中元劫持，众义士分头寻找，沿路行侠仗义；“小五义”不期而遇，结拜为兄弟；继而沈中元归附颜查散；众义士参悟阵图，分工破阵，不幸误落铜网。故事至此戛然而止，留下无尽悬念，待《续小五义》叙说。
