递归缩写

在计算机领域黑客社区中一个较早的传统（特别是在麻省理工大学）就是使用幽默地引用自身或其他缩写的缩写。最早的实例可能是在1977年或1978年间出现的 TINT ("TINT Is Not TECO"，TINT不是文字编辑器和修正器)，它是一个 MagicSix 的编辑器。这又启发了麻省理工大学的两个 Lisp Machine 编辑器的命名，一个叫做 EINE ("EINE Is Not Emacs"，EINE不是 Emacs)，另一个是 ZWEI ("ZWEI Was EINE Initially"，ZWEI一开始是EINE)。后来又有了 Richard Stallman的 GNU (GNU's not UNIX，GNU不是UNIX)。许多递归缩写包括否定语，通常用来指出这个缩写指代的事物 a 不是与另一个事物 b 相类似（但事实上，这个事物 a 通常与 b 非常相似甚至是 b 的衍生品）。

互相递归或者其他特殊递归方式

• GNU Hurd 计划的名称使用了一种互相递归的特殊方式: "Hurd" 代表 "Hird of Unix-Replacing Daemons", 而 "Hird" 意义是 "Hurd of Interfaces Representing Depth."

• GNUBrain 计划是另一个互相递归的实例。"Brain" 代表 "Brian relates any independent node" 而 "Brian" 代表 "Brain implements a network".

• RPM 和 PHP 原来是常规的首字母缩写但后来重新定义成递归缩写。

• 大多递归缩写都在第一个字母上递归，但 YOPY, "Your own personal YOPY" 是在最后一个字母上递归 (因此最后一个字母等于第一个字母).

递归缩写不仅限于技术，例如

• TIARA — TIARA is a recursive acronym

一些 公司 也将自己的公司名称递归缩写。

• BWIA — BWIA West Indies Airways (曾用名 British West Indian Airways)
• GES — GES Exposition Services (曾用名 Greyhound Exposition Services)
• LINK (UK) — Link Interchange NetworK, 联合王国 ATM 转换组织
• OIL - Oil India Limited - 这不是真正的递归缩写，因为Oil一词并不是这个缩写的重复，而是单词 "Oil"
• SAAB — Saab Automobile Aktiebolaget (曾用名 Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget.)
• TAP Air Portugal — 但在 葡萄牙语中，TAP 是 Transportes Aéreos de Portugal 的缩写而且不是递归的。
• VISA — Visa International Service Association
• ADAP - ADAP Discount Auto Parts
• PTTEP - PTT Exploration and Production Public Company (Ltd.)

2008年3月16日，可能是第一个采用递归缩写命名的人类在德国降生。男孩的名叫LIAS，代表了 “Lias Is Adrienne's Son.”

• 在小说《哥德尔、埃舍尔、巴赫：集异璧之大成》中，作者侯世达使用了递归缩写GOD, 'GOD Over Djinn'。 GOD 代表了 GOD Over Djinn, 表示 "GOD can never be fully expanded." 在德文翻译中这句话被翻成了"ZEUS ewig über Schinn", 意思是 "Zeus eternally over Djinn".
• KOS-MOS — Kosmos Obey Strategical Multiple Operation Systems, 这句话来自电视游戏Xenosaga.
• 一个递归缩写在 Dilbert 漫画中出现，Dilbert 说TTP 计划的意思是 The TTP Project
• 在 Twin Peaks中, Laura Palmer 预测她的报应 Bob, 是 "Beware of Bob" 的缩写
• 在 Archie 漫画系列 Sonic the Hedgehog，Eggman 的数字儿子叫做 A.D.A.M.，有两个意义，其中一个是 "A.D.A.M. Determines Anonymous' Movements".
• 在电视剧M*A*S*H 中的一集, Radar O'Reilly 谈及 A.W.O.L 表示的意思是 "A.W.O.L. without official leave".
• 在 DC Comics 漫画系列 Atari Force 中，ATARI 最初的意思是 "Atari Technology And Research Institute," 但在后来的版本中变成了 "Advanced Technology And Research Institute" 。
