1982年—1986年就职于机械工业部武汉材料保护研究所。
1986年—1992年就读于北京科技大学表面科学与腐蚀工程系,先后获硕士、博士学位。
1992年—2017年就职于北京科技大学,先后任讲师、副教授、教授,先后入选教育部跨世纪人才、国家级一二层次“百千万”人才、国家有突出贡献专家。长期从事工程材料腐蚀与防护、工程材料服役性能评价与预测、同步辐射与中子散射在材料中的应用、高超环境模拟与材料性能评价以及电化学工程、非晶和纳米(晶)材料制备等方面的研究。
1996年—2000年先后担任北京科技大学表面科学与腐蚀工程系副主任、腐蚀与防护中心副主任、主任,担任中国腐蚀与防护学会常务理事、秘书长。
1999年材料学院教授。
2000年6月担任北京科技大学科技处处长。
2007年7月担任北京科技大学校长助理,2008年9月担任北京科技大学党委常委、副校长,其中2007年—2017年担任国家重大科技基础设施“重大工程材料服役安全研究评价设施”项目建设指挥部总指挥、总工程师。
现任中山大学党委常委、正厅级常务副校长。[1]
国家重大科技基础设施建设中长期规划总体专家组副组长和材料领域专家组副组长、教育部重大科技基础设施专家委员会主任、国家新材料产业发展专家咨询委员会委员、国家重大科技专项-材料技术专家组成员,粤港澳大湾区国际科技创新中心专家咨询组成员。
2018年10月31日,教育部研究决定任命孙冬柏为中山大学常务副校长(正厅级)。[2]
先后参加、负责完成了国家自然科学基金项目、国家“八五”攻关项目、国家科技部基础研究项目、中石化总公司/中石油总公司项目和企业合作项目20余项;承担国家自然科学基金面上项目、“十五”“863”高新技术、北京市科委重大项目、总装预研项目等10余项科研项目。发表100多篇论文。
